Wood veneers are thin layers of wood that encase the base of our glass display cases, endearing them with a sense of refinement and elegance. Best of all? They are a cost effective method that delivers a classic, wooden texture. Wood veneers are made by slicing natural logs into thin sections of wood without damaging the core. These sections then undergo a hydro thermal treatment which increases the plasticity of the wood. From there, the wood skin is cut into thin strips. Lastly, the strips of wood are dried and pressed together with a strong adhesive.

While wood veneers can create a timeless centerpiece, they can also cause a few concerns. It is important to remember that wood is a natural source that changes as it ages. Exposure to various levels of humidity and absorbency which could alter the consistency of color. Likewise, different batches of harvested wood may have slightly varying shades of color. This can make it challenging to match new wood veneers to previously existing pieces.

Causes of color variation in wood include:

  • The minerality levels of the soil that the wood is grown in.

  • Exposure to differing levels of light.

  • Absorption of pinholes and sap runs.

  • Inconsistencies in grain patterns.

The variations that are reflected in the surface of the wood give it character and uniqueness! Because of this, wood veneers are able to enhance the natural, green feel of any space. If consistency is your thing, ordering from the same batch of wood is the best plan.
