How to Build Your Own Wooden Display Cabinets

Wooden display cases can make for great additions to a room or store interior. The type of items you will put on exhibit will influence your choice of design for the display case as well as the part of the room where you’re going to put it. For instance, collections are usually displayed in the living room while trophies and awards typically go in the office.

Given the right tools, building your own wooden display case is fairly simple. But make sure that you take accurate measurements particularly of the space where you’re planning to put your wooden display cases to ensure that all your items are properly exhibited.

To build a wooden display cabinet, you’re going to need pre-cut 1” x 8” lumber, plywood, finishing nails, box nails, sandpaper and paint or wood stain. You start by laying two of the shorter lumber pieces next to each other and marking the center by drawing a line across the area. This is the part where the center shelf will go.

Create a square using the four pieces of lumber and secure the pieces with 6P finishing nails. After that, install the center shelf on the marked line and secure with 6P finishing nails. Set the nails using the nail set and fill all the holes with wood putty.

Cover the box with the plywood and tack it in place by using 4P box nails on its corners and edges. Sand the entire display case after the putty has dried and stain or paint the cabinet in the color of your choice. It’s important to make sure that the wood putty is completely dried before you sand the cabinet lest the putty would fall out.

However, it’s important to note that it’s better to purchase wooden display cases if you’re going to use them for retail stores or commercial establishments. This kind of project is only for home use. After all, you want to use a durable and affordable cabinet such as the ones available through TecnoDisplay rather than build the showcase on your own.

I find that getting a quality solid wood display case is rather difficult. I looked at the Tecno Display website and I noticed quite a variety of solid wood showcases with all types of stains available, glass enclosures and very attractive and discreet side track lighting. They seem to me ideal for displaying quality giftware, jewelry, collectibles, trophy and memorabilia. Their wall showcase and museum case section are showing a wide variety of such glass cases.
