Merchandising Advice on a Budget

You don’t need to hire an expensive interior designer or an expert on color mixes to enhance the look of your store. All you need is a little creativity, good eye, a knowledge of your target clients’ taste and some practical advice on how to splash your store with some merchandising magic. First up, you would want to make your display cases and display equipment as attractive and lively as possible, and to do that, what you need is smart lighting. You don’t need to get fancy with different kinds of lights—little, simple and inexpensive halogen spotlights or pin lights would do the trick. Just know how to install them in a way that would really make your product stand out. If you are going for a main display window, avoid too much shadows, as they would obstruct your product’s glow, if you want some depth illusion, then shadows would be good.

If you find your displays stiff and very bland, then ask for the help of some flowing fabrics and some colorful papers—maybe your display just needs some playful backdrop. Your flowing fabrics—whether it be a huge sheet of tie died cloth or a long scarf would add movement and life to your display while your paper cutouts would add color and spunk. What you need to be careful about though, is having a busy and abstract look (if you are not going for them), as they would distract your customers away from the product—you may want to think of harmonizing your display cases, display equipment and store design with your merchandise, besides, it’s the product you are selling.

A can of paint would be handy in fixing up some chips and cracks on your walls or maybe, matching your display cases’ and display equipment’s colors with the whole store—it is a simple inexpensive trick to keep your store looking new. If you still lack inspiration for your store design, look up and browse through magazines or through the internet for some ideas. You would sure get some good insights of what you can do with your space, and how you could bring your products to life. Look among full page ads or pictures of fully furnished spaces, and you would sure get some inspiration on what you can do with your store’s design. Just be playful with your imagination and don’t be afraid to show your creative side—it would sure help in putting your business on the top line.
